Abstract
The building industry, as one of the major consumers of resources and emitters of greenhouse gases, has consistently faced sustainability challenges. In this context, prefabricated construction has emerged as a key strategy to enhance productivity and reduce environmental impacts. Despite the significant growth of research in this field, a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of global research trends has been limited. This study was conducted with the aim of mapping the knowledge structure and identifying the evolutionary trajectory of global research in the field of prefabricated construction.
To achieve this objective, a systematic bibliometric review adhering to the PRISMA guidelines was performed. Bibliographic data was extracted from the Scopus database and, following a rigorous four-stage screening process, 300 articles published between 2010 and 2024 were selected for final analysis. Data analysis was conducted using the Bibliometrix software in the R environment.
The findings revealed that the research output in this field has experienced exponential growth since 2010. Three major discourses have become established within it: sustainability and the circular economy; digitalization and automation; and structural engineering and performance. Geographically, China, Malaysia, and Australia were identified as the primary hubs of knowledge production, reflecting effective national policymaking and investment in research and development. However, the pattern of international collaboration among these countries was found to be limited. The thematic map confirmed the shift in research focus from initial technical topics towards systemic and sustainable themes such as supply chain management, carbon emissions, and life cycle assessment.
