Abstract
Introduction: Although the development of printing and packaging technologies in recent decades has provided numerous services and conveniences to consumers compared to the past, it has simultaneously led to excessive consumption of resources and non-renewable energy, causing serious environmental impacts and risks to ecological health. Packaging plays an important role in protecting, transporting, presenting, and communicating information about products. However, increasing consumption, mass production, and global distribution have turned packaging into one of the major sources of material use, waste generation, and environmental pollution. In this context, sustainable design has become an important approach in contemporary design. It seeks to reduce or prevent environmental crises caused by the design, production, consumption, and disposal of goods and services. In packaging design, sustainability is not limited to environmentally friendly materials. It also includes reducing energy consumption, conserving resources, minimizing waste, simplifying structures, reducing unnecessary printing, and improving recyclability.
The Purpose of the Research: The aim of the present research is to identify appropriate and creative solutions in the field of sustainable packaging. This is achieved through a case study of packaging products from three organizations—Tetra Pak, EcoEnclose, and Smurfit Kappa—which are active centers in sustainable design. These three organizations were selected because they represent different approaches to sustainable packaging. Tetra Pak focuses on food and beverage packaging systems, product protection, lightweight structures, and recyclability. EcoEnclose emphasizes responsible packaging for shipping and e-commerce through recycled and recyclable materials. Smurfit Kappa focuses on paper-based and corrugated packaging systems, structural efficiency, and sustainable material use. By examining these case studies, the research seeks to understand how sustainable design strategies are applied in practical packaging examples and how sustainability appears in material selection, structure, form, printing, and visual design.
Methodology: Therefore, the study has an applied objective and, in terms of data type and method of analysis, follows a qualitative nature with a descriptive-analytical approach. The research data and information have been collected from printed and electronic written sources as well as archival images. The theoretical framework is based on concepts related to sustainable design, sustainable packaging, energy reduction, energy conservation, recyclability, and environmental strategies in design. The descriptive part of the study examines the visible and documented characteristics of the selected packaging samples, including material type, structure, form, printable surfaces, and visual elements. The analytical part interprets these characteristics in relation to sustainable design principles. Since the research is qualitative, it focuses on comparison and interpretation rather than statistical analysis.
Findings and Discussion: Findings from the literature review indicate that the two main strategies in sustainable packaging design are reducing energy consumption and energy conservation. These strategies are reflected in the selection of raw materials and in decisions related to structure, form, printing, production, transportation, and recycling. Reducing energy consumption involves decreasing the energy required throughout the packaging life cycle, while energy conservation concerns preserving the value of materials through efficient use, reuse, and recyclability. The case studies show that Tetra Pak, EcoEnclose, and Smurfit Kappa employ different approaches while sharing the goal of reducing environmental impacts. Their main strategies include using recyclable materials, reducing material consumption, simplifying packaging structures, and limiting visual elements. Reducing printable surface areas and avoiding excessive decoration can also decrease the use of ink, coatings, paper, and energy.
Conclusion:
Furthermore, the results from examining sustainable packaging samples show that the use of recyclable materials and the limitation of material usage—by reducing printable surfaces, as well as the number and quantity of visual elements—are among the most important strategies employed in the packaging design of Tetra Pak, EcoEnclose, and Smurfit Kappa. The study concludes that sustainable packaging design is a multidimensional process that includes material selection, structural simplification, energy reduction, and visual restraint.
Overall, reducing energy consumption and energy conservation can be considered the two main strategies of sustainable packaging design. These strategies help designers and companies reduce environmental impacts while maintaining the functional and communicative role of packaging. The selected case studies demonstrate that sustainability in packaging is achieved through integrated design decisions that consider the entire life cycle of the package, from material selection and production to use, recycling, and disposal.
